It was founded in 1895 and became a University in 1966. Aston University is renowned for its world class Teaching Quality and Research and it has a record of being consistently amongst the best in the United Kingdom.
Aston University has strong links with industry, government and commerce.
It has a graduate employment record that is second to none and in 2006 the national average for graduates entering employment was 71% but from Aston University it was 84%, this is the highest proportion for a mainstream University in England and Wales. Between 1987 and the present day, a higher proportion of the graduates have found employment within 6 months of graduation more than any other British University.
Aston University is placed twelfth overall out of one hundred and thirteen Universities, this is stated in the “ The Good University Guide 2008,” which was published in The Telegraph and sponsored by Price Waterhouse Coopers, published in July 2007.
The Aston University is just a short walk into the centre of Birmingham; it is a thriving city with fantastic shopping facilities. The nightlife is every ones dream, suitable for young and old alike.
There are night clubs galore, cinemas, theatres, restaurants to suit almost every nationality. Burger bars, cafes, Art Galleries and a museum, in fact every thing you’ll need in your leisure time. 15% of the students are from over 80 countries from around the world.
Birmingham’s Chinatown boasts a wide range of restaurants and interesting specialist supermarkets, and for those who are fond of curries, Birmingham is the capital of the ‘Balti’ – inexpensive Kashmiri cuisine served in a wok-like metal dish.
The International student population adds to the learning and social experiences of all the other students, with an opportunity to study and interact with students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.
About 70% of undergraduates choose sandwich or language degree programmes. These include industrial, professional, business/management, scientific/health and language placement opportunities, allowing students to utilise their skills in the workplace. The placement opportunities are co-ordinated by the University. This valuable (and often paid) experience makes Aston students even more attractive to potential employers.
The University’s academic, social and accommodation facilities are based on our attractive, self contained green Campus, right in the centre of Birmingham, which is one of Europe’s liveliest and welcoming cities. It is a close-knit, safe and friendly campus atmosphere which provides the perfect environment for academic success and a fantastic student social life.
